OVERVIEW: U.S. Department of Agriculture – Risk Management Agency provides comprehensive insurance for crops against weather-related causes of loss and certain other unavoidable perils. Multi-Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI) is available for over 76 crops in primary production areas throughout the U.S. at 50-75% of the actual production history for the farm. Minimum Catastrophic Risk Protection coverage is available for an administrative fee of only $100 per crop per county. MPCI coverage provides protection against low yields and poor quality as well as prevented planting, late planting, and replanting costs for most crops.
TIMETABLE: Farmers should do an assessment when setting up their farms and determine what insurance they might need, and contact USDA Rural Development field offices for information on the MPCI program.
APPLICATION PROCESS: All MPCI insurance policies are available from private insurance agents. Find an agent with the USDA’s agent locator to find an agent in your state.
FOR MORE INFORMATION: We haven’t found a great deal of information on this program on-line. Here’s what we’ve found for farmers, and for the general public. If you know of a good resource, please post it in the comments.
