Chatham Coastal Resources Director Ted Keon told the board of selectmen last week that the mix of high water in Pleasant Bay (from the change in tides caused by the new inlet) and high surf from coastal storms provide all the necessary ingredients for erosion. The Cape Cod Chronicle covered the event:
“With this new inlet, that storm is coming right into the harbor,” he said. Marshes in Pleasant Bay which are typically dry are now routinely flooded, and Scatteree landing has eroded back to the jersey barriers that once helped keep the parking lot in place. A significant portion of the parking lot has been lost, and the shore has receded 20 to 30 feet on either side of the town property, Keon said.
