OVERVIEW: The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration may provideĀ up to $100 million per state for the repair or reconstruction of federal highways and roads on federal lands which have suffered serious damage as a result of natural disasters or catastrophic failures from an external cause. Damage to highways must be severe, occur over a wide area, and result in unusually high expenses to the highway agency. The state match generally varies from 10-20% depending on the class of federal-aid highway. No state match is required for emergency repairs accomplished within 180 days of the disaster to restore essential travel or for repair of roads on federal lands.
TIMETABLE: Available only following a major disaster.
APPLICATION PROCESS: States’ Department of Transportation must file a notice of intent to request emergency relief funds with the Federal Highway Administration Division Office in the state to start the application process.
